May 1, 2017

Speech Therapy at RCMH

In honor of Better Hearing and Speech Month, Rusk County Memorial Hospital is offering free speech therapy screenings during the month of May! To register for a free screening, please call Rusk County Memorial Hospital’s Rehab office at 715-532-5561, ext. 1301.

Speech and language disorders can take many forms and can limit academic achievement, social adjustment and career advancement. An individual may be born with a speech or language disorder, or it may be caused by injury or illness.

"Fortunately, most people with speech and language problems can be helped," said Becky Payne, Speech Therapist at Rusk County Memorial Hospital (RCMH). "Even if the problem cannot be eliminated, we can teach people with speech and language problems strategies to help them cope. People may not fully regain their capacity to speak and understand, but a speech-language pathologist can help them live more independently."

Rusk County Memorial Hospital is offering summer workshops led by a certified speech language pathologist to teach speech skills for different age levels. The Pediatric Speech and Language Group is for children under the age of 5 and will focus on enhancing basic language development by incorporating fun speech and language play-based activities. This group will meet on Fridays in the RCMH Riverside Room from 9:00 to 10:00 am on June 23, July 7, July 14 and July 21.

The Pediatric Articulation Group is for children ages 4-6 who are having difficulty producing sounds. This program will focus on increasing the child’s ability to produce speech sounds and learning to discriminate between correct and incorrect productions. This group will meet on Mondays in the RCMH Riverside Room from 9:00 to 10:00 am on June 19, June 26, July 10 and July 17.

The Young Adult Social Skills Group is for preteens and teens under the age of 18, and focuses on enhancing basic social skills and development, including eye contact, turn taking, when and how to start a conversation as well as attention to nonverbal communication skills. This class will take place on Fridays in the RCMH Riverside Room from 2:00 to 3:00 pm on June 23, July 7, July 14 and July 21.

The cost of each group is $25 per class (total of $100 per program). To register for a summer workshop, visit Rehab Services at 715-532-5561, ext. 1301. Registration must be completed no later than June 9, 2017. For questions or more information, contact Sabrina Fleurantin, MS Ed, CF-SLP at 715-532-5561, ext. 1301 or email Speech@ruskhospital.org.
