Bone Densitometry

(Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry DEXA)

A noninvasive diagnostic procedure used to measure the calcium density of the bone, usually in the lumbar spine and the hips. This procedure may also be called a DEXA-scan or BMD (bone mineral density) measurement.

Purpose: A Bone Densitometry exam is used to diagnose osteoporosis. Osteoporosis most often affects postmenopausal women but can also be found in men. A Bone Densitometry exam is also effective in monitoring the effects of osteoporosis treatment. Prior to your exam, an ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you have. If you think you are pregnant, please tell the technologist before your exam.

Preparation: A DEXA bone densitometry exam does not require any advance preparation.

What to Expect: When you arrive in the Imaging Services Department you will be asked to complete a brief history sheet. Once completed, the technologist will guide you to the bone density suite and you will be asked to lie on your back on a padded table. A detector will pass slowly over the area(s) of interest and images will be created on a computer monitor. The technologist will instruct you to hold very still during the examination.

Post Exam Information: Your Bone Density exam will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician. Your physician will be able to discuss the results of your exam with you.

Time Frame: 15-20 minutes
