CT Scan of the Abdomen/Pelvis

Purpose: A CT scan of the abdomen/pelvis produces cross-sectional images of abdominal and pelvic vessels and organs.

Preparation: If your exam requires the administration of IV contrast material, creatinine and GFR lab levels will need to be obtained prior to your scheduled appointment.

If your examination does not require the use of oral contrast, there is no advance preparation required for this examination.

If your examination requires oral contrast and is scheduled in the AM you will be instructed to drink 1 bottle of Redi-Cat at 10:00 PM the evening before your exam. Drink ½ of a second bottle 1 hour before your exam and the remaining ½ of the second bottle 30 minutes before your exam is scheduled.

If your examination requires oral contrast and is scheduled in the PM you be instructed to drink 1 bottle of Redi-Cat at 8:00 AM the day of your exam. Drink ½ of the second bottle 1 hour before your exam and ½ of the second bottle 30 minutes before your exam is scheduled.

Prior to your exam, an ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you have. If you think you are pregnant, please tell the technologist before your exam.

What to Expect: The technologist will position you on the CT table and make you as comfortable as possible. You will be instructed to lie as still as possible throughout the exam. If the order from the referring physician requires the administration of intravenous contrast material, an IV will be placed in your arm prior to the start of the exam. During the procedure, the table will move slowly through the opening in the scanner. The technologist will instruct you to hold your breath several times throughout the exam.

You will be alone in the room during the CT scan, however, the technologist will be able to see, hear and speak to you at all times.

Post Exam Information: Your images will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician. Your physician will be able to discuss the results of your exam with you.
