CT Guided Biopsy
Purpose: A CT Guided Biopsy is an imaging procedure that uses a small needle to remove a tissue or fluid specimen from a specified area.
Preparation: Specific preparation instructions will be given to you at the time of scheduling this procedure. Prior to your exam, an ARRT Registered Technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you have.
What to Expect: The technologist will position you and make you as comfortable as possible on the CT table. The area of interest will be localized by obtaining several images using the CT scanner. A local anesthetic will be injected and a small biopsy needle will be placed into the area of interest. The Radiologist will continually monitor this area while multiple CT images are obtained. Tissue specimens will be obtained and sent to the appropriate place for testing.
Post Exam Information: Your images will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician. Your physician will be able to discuss the results of your exam with you. Depending on what anatomy is biopsied you may be required to spend several hours in the hospital following this procedure.
