Virtual Colonscopy
Purpose: Virtual colonoscopy is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses the CT Scanner to produce cross-sectional images of the colon (large intestine)
Preparation: Bowel cleansing is essential prior to undergoing a Virtual Colonoscopy. Bowel preparation requires 4 days of special diets and bowel cleansing. Your physician will order a lab test to be drawn. The results of this test will determine your preparation method. Once lab results have been received, the Imaging Services Department will provide you with specific written instructions. Prior to your exam, an ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you have. If you think you are pregnant, please tell the technologist before your exam.
What to Expect: You will be asked to change into a gown and the technologist will take you to the CT scanner. You will be asked to lie on your side on the table while a small tube will be inserted into the rectum. This will tube will be used to fill the colon with air during the examination. Once air has filled your colon, a CT scan is performed while you lie comfortably on the table. You will be able to resume normal activities immediately following this procedure.
Post Exam Information:Your images will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician. Your physician will be able to discuss the results of your exam with you.
