CT Scan of the Neck/Cervical Spine
Purpose: A CT scan of the neck/cervical spine produces cross-sectional images of the structures from the base of the skull through the top of the lungs.
Preparation: A CT scan of the neck/cervical spine does not require any advance preparation. However, if your exam requires the administration of IV contrast material, creatinine and GFR lab levels will need to be obtained prior to your scheduled appointment. Prior to your exam, an ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you have. If you think you are pregnant, please tell the technologist before your exam.
What to Expect: The technologist will position you on the CT table and make you as comfortable as possible. You will be instructed to lie as still as possible throughout the exam. Your head will be placed in a special holder that will assist you in holding still for the examination. If the order from the referring physician requires the administration of intravenous contrast material, an IV will be placed in your arm prior to the start of the exam. During the procedure, the table will move slowly through the opening in the scanner.
You will be alone in the room during the CT scan, however, the technologist will be able to see, hear and speak to you at all times.
Post Exam Information: Your images will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician. Your physician will be able to discuss the results of your exam with you.
