Digital Mammography
Purpose: Digital Mammography is a low dose x-ray of the tissues of the breast. Annual mammography is the best way to detect breast cancer during its early, more treatable stages. The American Cancer Society recommends that women receive an annual mammogram beginning at age 40.
Preparation: Try to schedule your mammogram for the week following your menstrual period. This is usually when your breasts are least tender. Don't use any deodorant, powders, lotions, or creams on your chest or underarm area the day of your exam. If you have had previous mammograms at another location, you should bring the address and telephone number of that facility with you. If you think you are pregnant, please tell the technologist before your exam.
What to Expect: Your mammogram will be performed by a specially trained female ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist. For increased comfort, our facility provides every patient a MammoPad®—which is a soft, foam pad that creates a cushion between you and the mammography machine. The compression that is applied to your breast allows us to produce quality images while using the least amount of radiation possible. It is important that you tolerate as much compression as possible without being in pain.
A screening mammogram consists of two views of each breast. If a diagnostic mammogram is ordered to evaluate abnormalities, additional images from other angles, or special views of certain areas are often required. After your images have been completed, you will be asked to wait a few minutes while the images are reviewed. If they are acceptable, you will be free to leave.
Post Exam Information: Your mammogram images will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician. You will also receive a letter providing you with a summary of the mammogram report. Your physician will be able to discuss the results of your exam with you.
