Electrocardiogram (EKG)
A test that records the electrical activity of the heart. An electrocardiogram shows atypical rhythms and identifies heart muscle damage.
Purpose: An electrocardiogram is a test that measures the electrical activity of the heart.
Preparation: Having an EKG does not require any advance preparation.
What to Expect: Skin Electrodes will be placed on each arm, each leg, and on the chest around your heart. Lead wires will then be attached, connecting the electrodes to the EKG machine. You will be asked to lie still while the EKG machine collects information on the electrical activity of your heart. Once the data needed is obtained, the technologist will disconnect the leads and remove the skin electrodes.
Post Exam Information: Your EKG will be reviewed by an Internal Medicine physician and the interpretation will be shared with your referring physician.
Time Frame: 5-10 minutes
