Colon Imaging (Barium Enema)

Purpose: Colon imaging (barium enema) is a diagnostic imaging procedure used to evaluate the large intestine.

Preparation: Thorough cleansing of the large intestine is necessary to obtain diagnostic quality images for this procedure. The Imaging Services Department will provide you with an Evac-Q-Kwik preparation which includes step by step instructions to follow. You will be instructed not to have anything to eat, drink, smoke or chew after midnight the evening before your exam is scheduled. Prior to your exam, an ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have. If you think you are pregnant, please inform the technologist before your exam.

When a barium enema is ordered on pediatric patients, age appropriate preparation instructions will be given by the Imaging Services Department.

What to Expect: You will be asked to change in to a gown. The technologist will assist you in lying on your left side on the x-ray table. An enema tube will be gently inserted into your rectum. A small balloon at the end of the tube will be inflated to help you retain the barium during the examination.

The Radiologist will examine your colon by running the barium through the tube into your large intestine. You will be asked to turn from side to side as images are taken. After the necessary images have been obtained, the majority of the barium will be allowed to drain out of your colon before the enema tube is removed. You will then be taken to the bathroom to expel any remaining barium. When you are finished, the technologist will take one final image to assure that the majority of the barium has been expelled.

Post Exam Information: Before leaving the Imaging Services Department you will be given a stool softener and instructed to drink plenty of fluids throughout the remainder of the day. Your images will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician. Your physician will be able to discuss the results of your exam with you.
