Joint Injection
Purpose: A joint injection is a diagnostic imaging procedure used to inject medication into a joint space.
Preparation: A Joint Injection does not routinely require any advance preparation. If advance preparation is necessary you will be informed of the proper steps to follow when your exam is scheduled. Prior to your exam, an ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have. If you think you are pregnant, please inform the technologist before your exam.
What to Expect: You will be asked to change into a gown and the technologist will position you on the x-ray table. A physician will cleanse the area of interest and then numb it with a local anesthetic. A small needle will be inserted into the joint space and medication will be administered through the needle. The Radiologist will take several images throughout this procedure.
Post Exam Information: Your images will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician. Your physician will be able to discuss the results of your exam with you. You should plan to have somebody available to drive you home following the procedure.
