Upper GI Imaging (Stomach X-Ray)
Purpose: An Upper GI is a diagnostic imaging procedure that includes images of the upper gastrointestinal tract, which includes the esophagus and stomach.
Preparation: It is necessary that your stomach is empty for this procedure, so you will be instructed to not have anything to eat, drink, smoke or chew for at least 4 hours prior to your scheduled exam. Prior to your exam, an ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have. If you think you are pregnant, please inform the technologist before your exam.
What to Expect: You will be asked to change in to a gown. The technologist will position you on the x-ray table. A Radiologist will then ask you to drink barium as images are taken. You may also be asked to swallow some "fizzy" crystals which will produce gas in your stomach. The Radiologist will turn you in several positions to allow for better visualization of your stomach. After the Radiologist has completed taking images, the technologist may be instructed to take additional images to complete the exam.
Post Exam Information: Before leaving the Imaging Services Department you will be given a stool softener and instructed to drink plenty of fluids throughout the remainder of the day. Your images will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician. Your physician will be able to discuss the results of your exam with you.
Time Frame: 30 minutes
