Voiding Cystourethrogram/Cystogram
Purpose: A Voiding Cystourethrogram and Cystogram are diagnostic imaging procedures used to visualize the urinary tract, which includes the ureters, urethra and the bladder.
Preparation: A Voiding Cystourethrogram or a Cystogram does not require any advance preparation. Prior to your exam, an ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have. If you think you are pregnant, please inform the technologist before your exam.
What to Expect: You will be asked to change in to a gown and the technologist will ask you to lie on your back on the x-ray table. A catheter will be placed into the urethra. The Radiologist will observe as the contrast slowly drips into your bladder through the catheter. You may feel pressure as your bladder begins to fill. When your bladder reaches its capacity and you feel the urge to urinate, the Radiologist will take several images. The catheter will then be removed and you will be asked to urinate while lying on the table. It is important that the Radiologist is able to observe the contrast during voiding. The Radiologist may ask the technologist to take additional images once you have completely emptied your bladder.
Post Exam Information: Your images will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician. Your physician will be able to discuss the results of your exam with you.
