Ultrasound Guided Biopsy
Purpose: This procedure uses ultrasound imaging to localize abnormal tissue in a specified area and successfully guide the removal of this tissue.
Preparation: Specific preparation instructions will be given to you at the time of scheduling. A Registered Ultrasound Technician will explain the procedure and answer any questions you have.
What to Expect: You will be asked to lie on your back on the ultrasound table. A warm gel is applied to the area of interest. Local anesthetic may be injected and a biopsy needle will be guided into the specified area of interest. The Radiologist will be present and continually monitor the removal of the tissue using the ultrasound transducer. Tissue specimens will be obtained and sent to the appropriate site for testing.
Post Exam Information: Your images will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician. Your physician will be able to discuss the results of your exam with you. Depending on what anatomy was biopsied, you may be required to spend 1-2 hours in the hospital following this procedure.
