Carotid Doppler Ultrasound

Purpose: A Carotid Ultrasound evaluates blood flow through the carotid arteries. The carotid arteries are major blood vessels to the brain that are located on either side of your neck.

Preparation: A Carotid Doppler Ultrasound does not require any advance preparation. Prior to your exam, a Registered Ultrasound Technician will explain the procedure and answer any questions you have.

What to Expect: You will be asked to lie on your back on the ultrasound table. A warm gel is applied to the skin covering the carotid arteries. The ultrasound technician will move the transducer back and forth across the arteries as images are captured.

Post Exam Information: Your images will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the results of your exam will be forwarded to your physician. Your physician will be able to discuss the results of your exam with you.

Time Frame: 45-60 minutes
